Leerling & meester: Dijkhof Autorestauraties

Een eigen auto ontwerpen en vervolgens zelf ook bouwen. Voor veel liefhebbers niets meer dan een droom, maar voor Tom Meeuwsen de werkelijkheid. Deze jonge designer tekende zijn eigen auto en leerde onder meesterplaatwerker Martijn Dijkhof deze zelf in metaal vorm te geven. Wij trokken naar Dijkhof Autorestauraties in het landelijke Achterveld waar dit bijzondere verhaal plaatsvond.

Aan de rand van het dorp, uitkijkend over de groene weilanden van Midden-Nederland, staat een aantal fabriekshallen aan elkaar. Hier is Dijkhof Autorestauraties gevestigd, een gerenommeerde naam in de wereld van bijzondere klassieke auto’s. Eerder wisten zij modellen als een Bugatti Type 57C Atalante, een Moretti 1200S Barchetta en een Maserati A6G Frua terug te brengen tot nieuwstaat. En ook nu staan er meerdere klassiekers in verschillende staat van restauratie te wachten op de vaardige handen van Martin Dijkhof en zijn team. Maar vandaag zijn we hier voor iets anders: de totstandkoming van een unieke, zelfontworpen auto. Tom Meeuwsen vertelt: “Een paar jaar geleden was ik aan het einde van mijn studie Product Design aan de Willem de Kooning Academy, University of Applied Science in Rotterdam gekomen. Het enige wat nog moest gebeuren, was een afstudeerproject. Nu ben ik zelf altijd geïnteresseerd geweest in auto’s, ook van huis uit. Dus besloot ik voor mijn afstuderen zelf een auto te ontwerpen. Dat heb ik in de computer gedaan, gebruikmakend van de nieuwste digitale technieken.”

Inspiratie uit de jaren dertig

Meeuwsen pakt een grote stapel afbeeldingen, waarop het ontwerp van verschillende kanten te zien is, en spreidt deze uit over de tafel. Direct wordt duidelijk dat de inspiratie uit vooroorlogse auto’s komt. Maar waarom grijpt een 26-jarige ontwerper terug naar deze lang vervlogen tijden? “De basis voor mijn ontwerp zijn de aerodynamische principes van raceauto’s uit de jaren dertig. Die wisten voor die tijd bizarre prestaties te leveren en ik vind ze ook erg mooi.”

The 4.6 HSE, also known as P38A, was the second generation Range Rover, almost a quarter of a century after its debut. That meant that now we were in the 90s, and the concept of SUV had dramatically changed. People didn’t put off-road capabilities at the first place, instead they asked for luxury and comfort. During the design stage, several firms were contacted, and Bertone even made a full scale model, but at the end they opted for the classic British style, rightfully so. The 4.6 HSE gave exactly that (the HSE stands for “High Specification Equipment”), for instance it had an advanced, yet very troublesome, air suspension system, powered by the 4.6L V8, that would produce 225 hp and 280 ft-lb of torque. On the inside, it was basically a living room, so much in fact that in 1996 debuted the possibility of ordering one with a television and video system with VHS player. It was without a doubt the best off-roader in the world at the time of its debut, although unfortunately its cutting-edge electronics had plenty of faults, but it helped set the bar of what a luxury SUV should be. ? @iamted7
