De Mercedes-AMG SL is terug (van kort weggeweest)

In 2020 zwaaide Mercedes-Benz de SL uit, maar komend voorjaar is de ‘Sport Leicht’ gewoon weer terug. Zoals alleen Heintje Davids dat kon.

De Mercedes-AMG SL leek van het toneel verdwenen, maar staat over een half jaartje gewoon weer vrolijk in de showroom. De luxe roadster dost zich uit als 2+2-zitter (mensen tot 1,50 meter lang passen achterin) en is voorzien van een klassieke softtop. Het idee achter de SL: gebruik hem vooral dagelijks en voor lange zomerse tochten over slingerende bergwegen en langs azuurblauwe kusten.

Powerhouse

Zijn sportieve gezicht stopt de Mercedes-AMG SL echter niet onder stoelen of banken. Je hebt de keuze uit de SL 55 en SL 63 en die zijn beide voorzien van een zeer potente 4,0-liter V8-biturbo krachtbron. De SL 63 levert als voorlopige topversie 585 pk aan vermogen en 800 Nm aan kopppel. Binnen afzienbare tijd komt er ook een hybride SL aan die zelfs 800 pk levert. Anderzijds staat ook downsizing op het programma, want er zijn ook nog twee zescilinders op komst: de SL43 en SL53 met elektrohulp.

Ruimte en comfort

De SL is met een lengte van 4,70 meter een stuk langer dan de GT Roadster (en dan zijn SL-voorganger) en dat komt onder meer door het aluminium platform waar de auto op staat. In het interieur is dus flink wat ruimte en ook de modernste versie van het veel geprezen MBUX-infotainmentsysteem nodigt uit. Het is dezelfde versie die in de S-Klasse zit en wordt bediend via een verticaal touchscreen.

The 4.6 HSE, also known as P38A, was the second generation Range Rover, almost a quarter of a century after its debut. That meant that now we were in the 90s, and the concept of SUV had dramatically changed. People didn’t put off-road capabilities at the first place, instead they asked for luxury and comfort. During the design stage, several firms were contacted, and Bertone even made a full scale model, but at the end they opted for the classic British style, rightfully so. The 4.6 HSE gave exactly that (the HSE stands for “High Specification Equipment”), for instance it had an advanced, yet very troublesome, air suspension system, powered by the 4.6L V8, that would produce 225 hp and 280 ft-lb of torque. On the inside, it was basically a living room, so much in fact that in 1996 debuted the possibility of ordering one with a television and video system with VHS player. It was without a doubt the best off-roader in the world at the time of its debut, although unfortunately its cutting-edge electronics had plenty of faults, but it helped set the bar of what a luxury SUV should be. ? @iamted7
