Vernieuwde Audi S8: Filmheld

In de actiefilm Ronin (1998), met zijn heerlijke achtervolgingsscènes door Nice en Parijs, werd de Audi S8 ooit nét dat beetje extra sportieve imago gegeven. Maar helaas is de glans er inmiddels wel wat af, stelt Erik Kouwenhoven.

Dat ‘product placement’ veel voor een auto kan doen weten fabrikanten sinds jaar en dag. De Aston Martin DB5 en de Lotus Esprit werden wereldberoemd dankzij James Bond. Maar ook de Ferrari Daytona in de serie Miami Vice en de Lamborghini Countach in The Cannonball Run staan bij velen op het netvlies gegrift dankzij filmoptredens. Van recentere datum is de Audi S8 uit de film Ronin. De achtervolgingsscène met de S8 en de Citroën XM behoort volgens kenners tot de beste ooit gefilmd. Zeker omdat er geen trucage aan te pas kwam, zoals de laatste jaren veelvuldig gebeurt.

Lachgasinjectie

De betreffende Audi werd in de film voorzien van lachgasinjectie om ‘m beter geschikt te maken als vluchtauto. Daarmee kwam hij qua vermogen waarschijnlijk dicht in de buurt van de power die de S8 nu, in 2022, onder de kap heeft. Want dankzij zijn V8 met dubbele turbo is deze geweldenaar 571 pk sterk. Meer dan het R8 Le Mans prototype uit het jaar 2000, waarmee Audi destijds voor de eerste keer Le Mans won. En je hoeft niet eens coureur te zijn om met dit monsterlijke vermogen de weg op te gaan. Rijbewijs B en een goed gevulde portefeuille volstaan. Met z’n 4,0 liter biturbo V8 sprint de mastodont in 3,8 seconden naar 100 km/h. Om te zorgen dat de S8 niet in de eerste snelle bocht na een panoramische remweg in het struweel eindigt, hebben de onderstelmannen van de firma hun hele trukendoos geopend. Tot de kunstgrepen behoren zaken als actieve vierwielbesturing, een actief onderstel, een sportdifferentieel en progressieve besturing. Alles om jou, of je chauffeur, het gevoel te geven dat je het toch echt helemaal zelf doet…

The cause of all this chaos was, in the first place, the engine: the magnificent RB26 was replaced with a prodigious version developed for GT-1 class use, the 2.7l RB-X GT2 which developed 400hp and 469nm of torque. This engine was capable of pushing the 400R over 315km/h (195mph), with a 0-100 (0-60) in less than 4 seconds. The 4.6 HSE, also known as P38A, was the second generation Range Rover, almost a quarter of a century after its debut. That meant that now we were in the 90s, and the concept of SUV had dramatically changed. People didn’t put off-road capabilities at the first place, instead they asked for luxury and comfort. During the design stage, several firms were contacted, and Bertone even made a full scale model, but at the end they opted for the classic British style, rightfully so. The 4.6 HSE gave exactly that (the HSE stands for “High Specification Equipment”), for instance it had an advanced, yet very troublesome, air suspension system, powered by the 4.6L V8, that would produce 225 hp and 280 ft-lb of torque. On the inside, it was basically a living room, so much in fact that in 1996 debuted the possibility of ordering one with a television and video system with VHS player. It was without a doubt the best off-roader in the world at the time of its debut, although unfortunately its cutting-edge electronics had plenty of faults, but it helped set the bar of what a luxury SUV should be. ? @iamted7
