Een Bugatti kopen is een hels karwei

De aanschaf van een Bugatti is geen kwestie van een handtekening zetten bij de dealer. Voordat je wordt ontvangen in het hoofdkwartier, een kasteel in Molsheim, is er al aardig wat water door de Rijn gestroomd. Wij dompelden ons een dagje onder in de wereld der multimiljonairs.

Wanneer je als welgestelde autokoper in het plaatsje Molsheim aan komt vliegen met je helikopter, hoeft de piloot niet echt lang te zoeken naar de fabriek. Vanuit de lucht is het dak van de fabriek al van verre te zien. Een enorm Bugatti-logo fungeert als baken voor de nabijgelegen helikopterlandplaats. Maar voor het zover is, moet je eerst wat papierwerk invullen.

Bugatti bouwt jaarlijks 85 auto's. Reken op een levertijd van een jaar, want het duurt acht tot tien maanden voor alle onderdelen voor jouw auto binnen zijn. Daarna duurt het daadwerkelijke bouwen ook nog eens twee maanden. Eerst echter, geef je aan welk model je wilt kopen wordt je gevraagd een aanbetaling van 500.000 euro te doen. En je moet nog even aantonen dat je jouw geld eerlijk verdiend hebt.
Met die half miljoen koop je het 'slot' voor jouw auto, waarna je gevraagd wordt om langs te komen voor de configuratie. Dat gebeurt in een speciale lounge naast het kasteel van Ettore Bugatti in Molsheim. Je overnacht in het nabijgelegen plaatsje Obernai en dineert in 'La Fourchette des Ducs', een restaurant met twee Michelinsterren waar Ettore Bugatti ook graag kwam. Eenmaal in de lounge bij de fabriek word je vervolgens ontzorgd door butler Eric, die je voorziet van hapjes en drankjes, terwijl jij op een gigantisch scherm jouw droomauto samenstelt.

The 4.6 HSE, also known as P38A, was the second generation Range Rover, almost a quarter of a century after its debut. That meant that now we were in the 90s, and the concept of SUV had dramatically changed. People didn’t put off-road capabilities at the first place, instead they asked for luxury and comfort. During the design stage, several firms were contacted, and Bertone even made a full scale model, but at the end they opted for the classic British style, rightfully so. The 4.6 HSE gave exactly that (the HSE stands for “High Specification Equipment”), for instance it had an advanced, yet very troublesome, air suspension system, powered by the 4.6L V8, that would produce 225 hp and 280 ft-lb of torque. On the inside, it was basically a living room, so much in fact that in 1996 debuted the possibility of ordering one with a television and video system with VHS player. It was without a doubt the best off-roader in the world at the time of its debut, although unfortunately its cutting-edge electronics had plenty of faults, but it helped set the bar of what a luxury SUV should be. ? @iamted7
