Hongqi E-HS9: Zwaar op de maag

Zijn naam klinkt als een hamburgervariant en de grille is karikaturaal. Maar verder maakt de overdadig luxueuze Hongqi E-HS9 - sinds kort geïmporteerd door Stern - best hongerig, zo concludeert Erik Kouwenhoven na een eerste kennismaking.

Het is jammer dat je bij het zien van de Hongqi meteen denkt aan een schaamteloze Chinese Rolls-Royce rip-off. De visuele overeenkomsten zijn echter niet het gevolg van diefstal van kundige kopieerdrang, maar van het feit dat de Hongqi en de Rolls-Royce Cullinan dezelfde geestelijk vader hebben. De auto is namelijk getekend door Giles Taylor, die in het verleden bij het Britse merk werkte en nu als een overjarige topvoetballer nog even zijn pensioen veilig stelt in Azië.

Decadent

De 5,20 meter lange en twee meter brede Chinese SUV is het vlaggenschip van Hongqi. Het merk komt op termijn in meer smaken naar Europa. De verwachting is dat er eind 2023 en begin 2024 nog twee elektrische Hongqi’s worden geïntroduceerd. Met de decadente E-HS9 wil het merk vooral laten zien waar het toe in staat is, namelijk opulente luxe leveren voor een redelijke prijs. En daarin lijkt het Chinese merk geslaagd, want alhoewel de heritage van het Britse luxemerk Rolls-Royce niet in geld kan worden uitgedrukt, blijft het verschil tussen de 83.950 euro kostende Honqi en de 450.000 euro kostende SUV van het Britse merk aanzienlijk.

The 4.6 HSE, also known as P38A, was the second generation Range Rover, almost a quarter of a century after its debut. That meant that now we were in the 90s, and the concept of SUV had dramatically changed. People didn’t put off-road capabilities at the first place, instead they asked for luxury and comfort. During the design stage, several firms were contacted, and Bertone even made a full scale model, but at the end they opted for the classic British style, rightfully so. The 4.6 HSE gave exactly that (the HSE stands for “High Specification Equipment”), for instance it had an advanced, yet very troublesome, air suspension system, powered by the 4.6L V8, that would produce 225 hp and 280 ft-lb of torque. On the inside, it was basically a living room, so much in fact that in 1996 debuted the possibility of ordering one with a television and video system with VHS player. It was without a doubt the best off-roader in the world at the time of its debut, although unfortunately its cutting-edge electronics had plenty of faults, but it helped set the bar of what a luxury SUV should be. ? @iamted7
