Jeep Wrangler volgens Sam’s garage

Circuit Zandvoort, een koude en winderige zaterdagmorgen. Slechts één van de vele pitboxen is open. Binnen waakt een meisje koukleumend over een koffiezetapparaat en donuts.

Buiten, net uit de wind, staat een groep mannen te kijken hoe een fraai aangeklede Jeep Wrangler op het rechte stuk de strijd aangaat met een Aston Martin DBX707 en een Mercedes-AMG G63. Lang verhaal kort: de Jeep met SG-logo’s (van Sam’s Garage) verpulvert zijn opponenten, zowel als het gaat om de acceleratie als de remmerij. Onder toeziend oog van drones en fotografen rijden we even later zelf in de Jeep mee over het langzaam ontwakende circuit, waarbij we de baan voornamelijk via de zijruit voor ons zien. Geen twijfel: hier is een stel briljante specialisten aan het werk geweest om van de iconische Wrangler iets speciaals te maken. Niet alleen qua techniek en onderstel, maar ook als het gaat om de aankleding van in- en exterieur, waarvoor Heritage Customs van Niels van Roy tekent.

En wie is Sam dan wel? Laten we u voorstellen aan Sam van Vollenhoven. Iemand die - familietrekje - dol is op autorijden en bedacht dat de iconische Jeep Wrangler ideáál is om omgebouwd te worden tot een van de beste rijmachines op de 4x4-markt. Oh en hij is de zoon van, dat ook. Ik ga u niet vermoeien met ordinaire details als prijslijsten en opsommingen van mogelijke aanpassingen. Al was het alleen maar omdat de S/G-Jeeps nog vol in ontwikkeling zijn en in feite alles mogelijk is. Het gaat om pakketten, waarbij er niet geschroomd wordt om compleet nieuwe veer-, rem- en uitlaatsystemen te monteren, de binnen- en buitenzijde tot in detail aan te passen (“Geen modieus carbon, want dat slaat nergens op in zo’n auto, maar wel alcantara”, hoor ik naast mij zeggen) en de motor te boosten tot pakweg 840 pk. “We bieden de klant bespoke materialen, unieke wielen, details, geluidssystemen, ophangingsopstellingen en al met al vakmanschap van het hoogste niveau,” aldus Sam (Samuel mag ook) van Vollenhoven. We besluiten het hierbij te laten en zien in onze ooghoeken, op weg naar de laatste donut-voor-onderweg, hoe de S/G Jeep na een sprint al noodstoppend twee complete wagenlengtes eerder stilstaat dan de Mercedes-AMG.

The 4.6 HSE, also known as P38A, was the second generation Range Rover, almost a quarter of a century after its debut. That meant that now we were in the 90s, and the concept of SUV had dramatically changed. People didn’t put off-road capabilities at the first place, instead they asked for luxury and comfort. During the design stage, several firms were contacted, and Bertone even made a full scale model, but at the end they opted for the classic British style, rightfully so. The 4.6 HSE gave exactly that (the HSE stands for “High Specification Equipment”), for instance it had an advanced, yet very troublesome, air suspension system, powered by the 4.6L V8, that would produce 225 hp and 280 ft-lb of torque. On the inside, it was basically a living room, so much in fact that in 1996 debuted the possibility of ordering one with a television and video system with VHS player. It was without a doubt the best off-roader in the world at the time of its debut, although unfortunately its cutting-edge electronics had plenty of faults, but it helped set the bar of what a luxury SUV should be. ? @iamted7
