Precisie-instrumenten: met de BMW i7 naar de stad van Leica

Bijna geluidloos gleden Huib de Vries en Maurice Volmeyer met de BMW i7 over de Sauerlandlinie naar Wetzlar: de bakermat van de moderne fotografie en de stad van Leica. Want de fotograaf had een plan: een analoge zwart-witreportage met zijn oude Leica M6. De camera die zich als een klassieke sportwagen maar bleef ontwikkelen en nu zelfs opnieuw in productie is genomen. Ze namen ook een kijkje in de normaal gesproken hermetisch gesloten Leica fabriek.

Razendsnel en fluisterstil. Gemaakt door vakmensen met de grootste precisie, gebruikmakend van de meest hoogwaardige materialen. Dat zijn nogal wat superlatieven, horen we u denken. Hebben we het hier over de BMW i7, de elektrische toplimousine uit Beieren? Nee. We hebben het over Leica camera’s. Maar we snappen de verwarring, want deze kwalificaties zijn ook van toepassing op BMW’s nieuwste vlaggenschip. Maar daarover later meer.

We hebben iets uit te leggen. Fotograaf Maurice Volmeyer had namelijk een bijzonder plan. “We maken een reportage met mijn oude analoge Leica M6. Ja, ik neem genoeg fotorolletjes mee. Zwart-wit. We moeten er wel de tijd voor nemen, want ik moet veel beter nadenken over elk beeldje. Alles gaat met de hand.” Prima, gaan we doen. “Oh, en dan gaan we naar Leica in Wetzlar, want Leica heeft de productie van diezelfde legendarische M6 camera weer hervat.” Huh? “Ja, want er is enorm veel vraag naar analoge camera’s. Vooral tijdens de coronacrisis is men het tijdrovende ouderwetse handwerk weer gaan waarderen. Die dure camera’s zijn niet aan te slepen.”

Goed. Gaan we doen. Maar we nemen dan wel een hypermoderne automobiel mee. Duits ook. De BMW i7 dus. En wat blijkt? Er zijn meer overeenkomsten tussen deze twee dure toestellen te vinden dan we dachten. En dan hebben we het niet over het kristalglas dat we overal in de BMW aantreffen. Of over het feit dat Leica via een van de dochterondernemingen ook lenzen maakt voor autokoplampen.

The 4.6 HSE, also known as P38A, was the second generation Range Rover, almost a quarter of a century after its debut. That meant that now we were in the 90s, and the concept of SUV had dramatically changed. People didn’t put off-road capabilities at the first place, instead they asked for luxury and comfort. During the design stage, several firms were contacted, and Bertone even made a full scale model, but at the end they opted for the classic British style, rightfully so. The 4.6 HSE gave exactly that (the HSE stands for “High Specification Equipment”), for instance it had an advanced, yet very troublesome, air suspension system, powered by the 4.6L V8, that would produce 225 hp and 280 ft-lb of torque. On the inside, it was basically a living room, so much in fact that in 1996 debuted the possibility of ordering one with a television and video system with VHS player. It was without a doubt the best off-roader in the world at the time of its debut, although unfortunately its cutting-edge electronics had plenty of faults, but it helped set the bar of what a luxury SUV should be. ? @iamted7
