Nieuwe Audi S8 zit vol met slimme onderstelsystemen

Audi heeft z’n S8 vernieuwd. Dankzij een 571 pk sterke 4,0-liter V8 benzinemotor is er genoeg sportiviteit aan boord, maar belangrijker; Audi koppelt die power aan een flink aantal slimme onderstelsystemen.

Waarschijnlijk heeft nog nooit iemand een Audi S8 een stoplichtsprintje zien doen. Met de CEO op de achterbank is het immers wat vreemd om als een maniak weg te schieten. Maar dat de Audi S8 flink wat sportiviteit onder de motorkap heeft, staat wel vast. De nieuwe S8 beschikt immers over een 571 pk sterke 4,0-liter V8 benzinemotor met twee turbo’s. Het maximumkoppel bedraagt 800 Newtonmeter.

Stabiliteit

Het belangrijkste van de S8 is dat hij een gevoel van overdaad geeft. In prestaties, maar meer nog in luxe en comfort. Audi monteert een actief gedempt onderstel dat bovendien een voorspellende gave heeft. Een camera aan de voorzijde speurt naar oneffenheden in het wegdek en eenmaal waargenomen, past het systeem de hoogte van de vier afzonderlijke wielen aan. De technologie zorgt er bovendien voor dat de carrosserie nauwelijks helt of duikt bij acceleratie of afremmen.

Bochten gladstrijken

Als de bestuurder het Audi drive select-systeem dan ook nog eens in de ‘Comfort +’ rijstand zet, worden bochten helemaal vloeiend genomen. De carrosserie leunt dan immers met maximaal 3 graden in de bocht, waardoor de laterale krachten nauwelijks invloed uitoefenen op de inzittenden.

Ander voordeel van het actieve onderstel is dat de S8 5 centimeter hoger op z’n poten komt te staan bij het instappen.

Rij-assistenten

Verder is de Audi S8 uitgerust met vierwielaandrijving, vierwielbesturing en een sportdifferentieel. Op de optielijst kun je dan nog vederlichte carbon-keramische schijfremmen aanvinken en het aantal rijassistentiesystemen uitbreiden tot wel 38 stuks. Op uiterlijk gebied is de Audi S8 behoorlijk compleet, maar voor 21-inch velgen moet je wel even de extra’s raadplegen. Vink dan meteen het black styling pakket voor een looks met nog meer luxe en sportiviteit.

The 4.6 HSE, also known as P38A, was the second generation Range Rover, almost a quarter of a century after its debut. That meant that now we were in the 90s, and the concept of SUV had dramatically changed. People didn’t put off-road capabilities at the first place, instead they asked for luxury and comfort. During the design stage, several firms were contacted, and Bertone even made a full scale model, but at the end they opted for the classic British style, rightfully so. The 4.6 HSE gave exactly that (the HSE stands for “High Specification Equipment”), for instance it had an advanced, yet very troublesome, air suspension system, powered by the 4.6L V8, that would produce 225 hp and 280 ft-lb of torque. On the inside, it was basically a living room, so much in fact that in 1996 debuted the possibility of ordering one with a television and video system with VHS player. It was without a doubt the best off-roader in the world at the time of its debut, although unfortunately its cutting-edge electronics had plenty of faults, but it helped set the bar of what a luxury SUV should be. ? @iamted7
