Volkswagen gaat diep door het stof voor een instagram-commercial voor de nieuwe Volkswagen Golf. In het clipje is een donkere man te zien die door een witte hand weg van een auto wordt geduwd.

Het leek zo’n simpel clipje. Een felgele Volkswagen Golf staat geparkeerd in een winkelstraat. De man die de auto van dichtbij wil bekijken, wordt op een afstand gehouden door een grote hand. De man wordt met één vinger opzij geduwd, bij zijn hoofd opgepakt en vervolgens een gebouw in ‘gepiekt’. Een probleem: de grote hand is van een blank persoon, de man die ‘lollig’ van de auto wordt weggehouden heeft een donkere huidskleur. En dan wordt hij ook nog eens een gebouw met de naam 'Petit Colon’ in gewerkt, Frans voor ‘Kleine Kolonist’. Oeps.

Letters

Om het geheel nog wat erger te maken, verschijnen op speelse wijze de letters van ‘der neue golf’ in beeld. Wie het beeld na de eerste frames stilzet, leest het n-woord, wat zowel in het Duits als Nederlands hetzelfde is. Dubbel oeps.

Verontschuldigingen

Volkswagen heeft de advertentie inmiddels verwijderd en zegt ernstig geschokt te zijn. In een statement zegt het: “We begrijpen volkomen de walging en woede die deze video opwekt. Het is duidelijk dat deze video fout en smakeloos is. We distantiëren ons sterk van deze video en bieden oprechte verontschuldigingen aan.” Volkswagen doet onderzoek naar hoe de commercial tot stand is gekomen.

The 4.6 HSE, also known as P38A, was the second generation Range Rover, almost a quarter of a century after its debut. That meant that now we were in the 90s, and the concept of SUV had dramatically changed. People didn’t put off-road capabilities at the first place, instead they asked for luxury and comfort. During the design stage, several firms were contacted, and Bertone even made a full scale model, but at the end they opted for the classic British style, rightfully so. The 4.6 HSE gave exactly that (the HSE stands for “High Specification Equipment”), for instance it had an advanced, yet very troublesome, air suspension system, powered by the 4.6L V8, that would produce 225 hp and 280 ft-lb of torque. On the inside, it was basically a living room, so much in fact that in 1996 debuted the possibility of ordering one with a television and video system with VHS player. It was without a doubt the best off-roader in the world at the time of its debut, although unfortunately its cutting-edge electronics had plenty of faults, but it helped set the bar of what a luxury SUV should be. ? @iamted7
