James Bond en de Triumph Stag: Heibel in Amsterdam

In No Time To Die knalt James Bond als vanouds over het doek in een Aston Martin. Je zou haast vergeten dat onze filmheld ook wel eens wat anders heeft gereden, zoals in 1971, toen hij met een Triumph Stag op boevenjacht ging in Amsterdam. Sandor van Es en Maurice Volmeyer gaan op zoek naar zijn sporen.

Autoliefhebbers komen bij de nieuwste rolprent van James Bond weer volop aan hun trekken. Vooral als je van Engelse sportwagens houdt is het smullen, nooit eerder was er zo’n uitgebreide line-up met Aston Martins. Naast de traditionele DB5 - vernield in Skyfall, opgeknapt en aan Bond cadeau gedaan in Spectre - maken een klassieke V8 Vantage en actuele DBS Superleggera plus Valhalla hun opwachting. Een fijne commercial. Evengoed poetst de overdosis Aston Martins het kleurrijke palet aan andere voormalige Bond-auto’s niet uit ons geheugen. Gelukkig maar, zouden we willen toevoegen. Zo herinneren we smakelijke scenes met aansprekende modellen als de Lotus Esprit (in The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only) en de BMW Z8 (in The World Is Not Enough), al was dat een mock-up. Ook de Toyota 2000GT uit You Only Live Twice staat ons helder voor de geest. Speciaal voor Sean Connery werd het dak van de Japanse sportcoupé gezaagd, anders paste de boomlange Schot er niet in.

Voor dit verhaal richten we onze pijlen op de Triumph Stag. Dat deze minder hoog op de diverse lijsten met favoriete Bond-machines staat, komt ongetwijfeld omdat er geen wilde achtervolgingen mee zijn gedaan. Dat maakt hem waarschijnlijk zelfs minder ‘oproepbaar’ dan de Citroën 2CV (For Your Eyes Only) en Renault 11 (A View to Kill), waarmee een melige Roger Moore nogal kolderieke caperiolen uithaalde.

Daarnaast is Diamonds Are Forever, waarin de Stag acte de présence geeft, niet de meest memorabele aflevering van de illustere franchise. Althans, vanuit cinematografisch perspectief. Zet je echter een oranje bril op, dan is er in elk geval een kleine tien minuten te genieten. In de lange reeks van vijfentwintig films is Diamonds Are Forever namelijk de enige waarin 007 ons land bezoekt. In een scenario dat zich haast volledig afspeelt in en om Las Vegas, mogen de Amsterdamse grachten zelfs een exotisch uitstapje worden genoemd.

The 4.6 HSE, also known as P38A, was the second generation Range Rover, almost a quarter of a century after its debut. That meant that now we were in the 90s, and the concept of SUV had dramatically changed. People didn’t put off-road capabilities at the first place, instead they asked for luxury and comfort. During the design stage, several firms were contacted, and Bertone even made a full scale model, but at the end they opted for the classic British style, rightfully so. The 4.6 HSE gave exactly that (the HSE stands for “High Specification Equipment”), for instance it had an advanced, yet very troublesome, air suspension system, powered by the 4.6L V8, that would produce 225 hp and 280 ft-lb of torque. On the inside, it was basically a living room, so much in fact that in 1996 debuted the possibility of ordering one with a television and video system with VHS player. It was without a doubt the best off-roader in the world at the time of its debut, although unfortunately its cutting-edge electronics had plenty of faults, but it helped set the bar of what a luxury SUV should be. ? @iamted7
